                          RAMADANUL KAREEM

Ramadan is the ninth month of the islamic calendar. Muslims worldwide observe this as a month of fasting. This annual observance is regarded as one of theFive Pillars of islam . The month lasts 29–30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon.
The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic , which means scorching heat or dryness. Fasting is fardh for adult Muslims, except those who are suffering from an illness, travelling, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic or going through menstrual bleeding. Fasting the month of Ramadan was made obligatory  during the month of Sha'aban, in the second year after the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina.
While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations; in some interpretations Muslims also refrain from other behavior which could be perceived as sinful such as swearing, engaging in disagreements, listening to music . Food and drink is served daily, before sunrise and after sunset. According to Islam, the rewards of fasting are many, but in this month they are believed to be multiplied.Fasting for Muslims during Ramadan typically includes the increased offering of salat (prayers) and recitation of the Quran.

     KALLAYI RIVER

Kallayi River is one of the rivers in kerala, india.  It originates in Cherikkulathur in the Western Ghats  at an altitude of 45 m and is 40 km long. It is linked to the Chaliyar River  by a man-made canal on the south side of the small timber village of Kallayi River lying on its banks. The Kallayi River was known for its timber businesses, but now many of these have been closed down. Its basin is located in the Kozhikode District
The land along the river banks are totally government property. But some influential people have manipulated the offices to create fake documents and possessed this invaluable property.

Another major threat that the river face is heavy pollution.
Waste disposed from butcheries in this area and the common garbage disposed from nearby populated areas is all being dumped into this river.
The dirt accumulated over the years adds to this misery. The dumping of waste after the cleanup of canoly canal in Muryad region in the middle of Kallai River has caused the formation of a 2 acre wide delta inside the river.

Kallai River is also the disposal place for the 'Black water' from some big hospitals in Kozhikode city causing deoxidization of the river water. This kills the fish population of the river and causes serious health hazards to people working in timber industry in Kallai.
The massive campaign organized by kallai puzha samrakshana samithi, with active assistance of school/college students and the janamaithri police has to some extend succeeded in restricting this pollution.
